Turning Coconut Waste Into Creativity

The coconut shell craft workshop is one of the creative sustainability activities led by Dhruvansh. This activity engages volunteers, school children and community groups in transforming discarded coconut shells into functional and decorative products using simple tools and natural finishing materials.

The initiative directly addresses the loss of natural bird habitats caused by rapid urban development in Hyderabad, providing safe nesting sanctuaries for house sparrows, robins and other small avian species.

From Shell to Something Useful

Selection & Pulp Removal

Choose a mature, dry coconut shell, split it, and remove the inner coconut meat.

De-Husking & Shaping

Remove the outer fibers using a chisel or wire brush, then cut and shape the shell according to your design

Multi-Grit Sanding

Smooth the shell using 80 → 150 → 220 → 400 → 1000 grit sandpaper for a polished finish.

Finishing & Oil Polish

Clean the shell, apply natural coconut oil or beeswax, allow it to soak, and buff for a glossy finish.
