Project Overview

Ecological Restoration of Pleasant Valley Lake

Pleasant Valley Lake is a 6-acre urban water body located in the Jubilee Hills region of Hyderabad, Telangana. Over years of rapid urban expansion, encroachment, and unregulated waste dumping, the lake suffered severe ecological degradation.

In 2019, Dhruvansh NGO—a Hyderabad-based environmental organization founded by environmentalist Madhulika Choudhary—undertook the eco-restoration and rejuvenation of Pleasant Valley Lake. Through a combination of low-cost, nature-based technologies, bio-remediation, and community engagement, the initiative turned a decaying urban sink into a vibrant, self-sustaining freshwater ecosystem.

Pre-Restoration Challenges

Prior to intervention by Dhruvansh NGO, Pleasant Valley Lake faced environmental hazards typical of rapidly urbanizing metro areas:

01.Untreated Sewage Inflow

Untreated domestic sewage and greywater entered the lake from nearby residential areas, degrading water quality and increasing organic pollution levels.

2. Solid Waste & Debris Accumulation

Plastic waste, construction debris, and municipal waste accumulated along the shoreline and blocked key lake inlets and outlets.

3. Invasive Aquatic Weeds

High nutrient levels encouraged excessive water hyacinth growth, reducing sunlight penetration, restricting oxygen levels, and affecting aquatic life.

4. Siltation & Reduced Water Capacity

Soil erosion and organic matter accumulation caused heavy siltation, reducing the lake’s depth, storage capacity, and overall water-holding potential.

Key Restoration Interventions & Methodology

A nature-based approach combining ecological treatment, solar technology, monitoring, and habitat restoration to revive Kokapet Lake.

Solid Waste Removal & Desilting

Systematic removal of plastic, debris, construction waste, weeds, and accumulated silt restored the lake’s depth and improved overall water flow.

Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTWs)

Eco-friendly floating wetlands with native aquatic plants helped absorb excess nutrients, support beneficial microbes, and naturally improve water quality.

Nature-Based Sewage Treatment & Aeration

Incoming wastewater was biologically filtered before entering the lake, while solar aerators increased dissolved oxygen and reduced organic pollution and foul odors.

Green Buffer Zones & Shoreline Stabilization

Native trees, grasses, and soil-binding plants were established around the lake to strengthen the shoreline, control erosion, and create a healthier ecological buffer.
