Project Overview

Reviving Neknampur Lake, Restoring Nature

Neknampur Lake is a historic 15-acre water body in Hyderabad, once severely degraded by raw sewage, construction debris, solid waste, and extensive water hyacinth growth.

Dhruvansh Organization, led by environmentalist Madhulika Choudhary, adopted the lake in 2016 and initiated its ecological restoration through sustainable solutions including Floating Treatment Wetlands, phytoremediation, bioremediation, aeration, weed management, and community engagement. These efforts have improved water quality, enhanced biodiversity, increased water retention, and revived the lake as a thriving urban ecosystem.

Neknampur Lake

Pre-Restoration Challenges

Before restoration, Kokapet Lake faced increasing ecological pressure from pollution, invasive growth, silt accumulation, and habitat degradation.

 

01. Water Quality Decline

Raw sewage and polluted wastewater entered the lake, creating foul odors, poor water quality, and unhealthy conditions for aquatic life.

02. Invasive Weed Growth

Extensive water hyacinth covered the lake surface, restricting sunlight and oxygen availability and disrupting the aquatic ecosystem.

03. Sewage Inflow

Untapped sewage and greywater from surrounding areas continuously flowed into the lake, further degrading water quality.

04. Biodiversity Loss

Poor water quality and degraded habitats caused a decline in native aquatic life and biodiversity, leaving the lake in a severely degraded ecological state.

A nature-based approach combining ecological treatment, solar technology, monitoring, and habitat restoration to revive Kokapet Lake.

Floating planted systems use wetland vegetation and root-zone microorganisms to naturally improve water quality and support aquatic life.

Solar-Powered Aeration

Solar-powered aerators increase dissolved oxygen and improve water circulation, creating healthier conditions for aquatic organisms.

Ecological Monitoring

Regular monitoring of water quality, vegetation, biodiversity, and lake conditions helps track recovery and guide restoration efforts.

Native Habitat Restoration
