Project Overview

Reviving Janamma Cheruvu, Restoring Nature

Janamma Cheruvu is a 15-acre semi-urban water body in Shadnagar, Ranga Reddy district, Telangana, that faced challenges from untreated wastewater, solid waste dumping, silt accumulation, and invasive aquatic weeds.

Dhruvansh NGO, led by environmentalist Madhulika Choudhary, undertook the lake’s ecological restoration in 2020 using sustainable, nature-based solutions including Floating Treatment Wetlands, bio-remediation, surface aeration, weed removal, inlet clearing, desilting, and native plantation. These efforts focused on improving water quality, enhancing biodiversity, supporting groundwater recharge, and restoring the lake as a healthy, self-sustaining ecosystem.

Pre-Restoration Challenges

Before restoration, Kokapet Lake faced increasing ecological pressure from pollution, invasive growth, silt accumulation, and habitat degradation.

 

01. Water Quality Decline

Untreated wastewater and nutrient-rich inflows degraded water quality, disturbing the lake’s natural ecological balance.

02. Invasive Weed Growth

Excess nutrients encouraged invasive aquatic weeds, covering the water surface and reducing sunlight and oxygen availability.

03. Silt & Habitat Degradation

Sediment and organic matter accumulated over time, reducing water storage and degrading natural habitats within the lake.

04. Biodiversity Loss

Declining water quality and habitat degradation affected aquatic life, native vegetation, and bird populations across the lake.

A nature-based approach combining ecological treatment, solar technology, monitoring, and habitat restoration to revive Kokapet Lake.

Floating Treatment Wetlands

Floating planted systems use wetland vegetation and root-zone microorganisms to naturally improve water quality and support aquatic life.

Solar-Powered Aeration

Solar-powered aerators increase dissolved oxygen and improve water circulation, creating healthier conditions for aquatic organisms.

Ecological Monitoring

Regular monitoring of water quality, vegetation, biodiversity, and lake conditions helps track recovery and guide restoration efforts.
