Seed Ball Making and Dispersal is one of Dhruvansh’s grassroots conservation initiatives, designed to make reforestation simple, accessible and scalable. The activity brings together volunteers, students and communities to create seed balls using native seeds, soil and organic compost.

The initiative supports biodiversity restoration across lake slopes, degraded landscapes and other difficult-to-access areas, while encouraging meaningful hands-on engagement with nature. It also creates opportunities for community connection, environmental awareness and stress-relieving outdoor activity.

THE NEED

Why Seed Balls?

Rapid urbanisation, habitat degradation and limited access to suitable planting areas make conventional reforestation difficult in many landscapes. Seed balls provide a simple, low-cost and scalable way to introduce native plant species across lake buffer zones, degraded forests, rocky terrain and other hard-to-reach areas.

By protecting seeds inside a soil-and-compost casing, seed balls help shield them from seed predators and harsh conditions until rainfall creates suitable conditions for germination.

Ingredients & Ratios

To ensure optimal structural integrity and nutrient delivery, Dhruvansh recommends the following balanced mixture:

Red Clay Soil / Topsoil	3 to 5 parts	Provides structural stability, protection against rain erosion, and shape holding.
Organic Compost / Vermicompost	1 part	Supplies essential nutrients (NPK) and moisture retention for emerging seeds.
Native Plant Seeds	3 to 10 seeds per ball	Indigenous tree, shrub, or herb species adapted to local climatic conditions.
Water	As needed	Hydrates soil mixture to achieve workable clay dough consistency.
Chili Powder / Neem Powder (Optional)	Pinch per batch	Acts as a natural deterrent against ants and burrowing insects.

Step-by-Step Preparation Protocol

The process follows a clean, streamlined workflow:

Dry Mixing

Pass the soil and compost through a mesh sieve, then mix them thoroughly in the recommended ratio of approximately 3:1.

Dough Preparation

Gradually add water to the dry mixture and knead until it reaches a moist, moldable clay-dough consistency.

Seed Encapsulation

Place 3–10 native seeds into the mixture and gently roll it into a firm, smooth ball measuring approximately 2–4 cm in diameter.

Shade Drying

Place the finished seed balls in a shaded, well-ventilated area and allow them to air-dry completely before storage or dispersal.
